This week marks the very last entry in this summer’s “Weekend Warmup” blog series! I’ve had a lot of fun sharing some of my favorite stuff with y’all, and hope its fired off some creative sparks for my readers. I saved this entry for last, because its one that’s been taking up a lot of real estate in my heart and mind lately: the “To-Don’t” List. I’ll explain.
As a Type A, productivity is my middle name. I dream in “to-do” lists. My seemingly never-ending drive to accomplish is what inspired my song “Slow Down”, which struck a chord with a lot of you other Type A’s out there. Like all drugs, checking things off the “to-do” list fills you with all sorts of good feelings at first (Check mark! HELL yeah! Move over, Superwoman!) And then all of the little boxes are full, leaving you empty, worn-out, and hunting for another fix. Another task to make you feel valuable. I know too well what this feels like. Life on the gerbil wheel is just exhausting. And y’all, I’m really tired. Like all addicts, I feel permanently stuck on the wheel, until I remember that I’m actually a free woman, not a gerbil! I can get off the wheel any time I want, and when I do, I actually get to be that free woman, without all the “doing”. And yet, if I’m being honest, I’m scared to get off. It’s all in that last little phrase: without all the “doing”. There’s a part of me that isn’t totally sure who I would be without all the “doing”. A part that isn’t sure if ME minus all the “doing” is someone my friends will think is cool. Someone men will respect. Someone little girls will look up to. Someone magazines will write articles about. You get the idea. But I’m trying hard to not be afraid of the things I don’t know, and go after the things I do know. And here’s something I know: that gerbil wheels are for gerbils, not human beings, and that I need to get off mine. Anyone brave enough to hold my hand and jump off with me, here’s step one: the “To-Don’t” List.
Instead of making a list of things I need to do this weekend, I’m making a list of things I’m not going to do, and am hereby releasing myself from the responsibility of doing them! Here’s my list:
— feel guilty about taking a nap
— solve someone else’s problems for them
I’ve also made a lifetime “To-Don’t” List, of things I’m freeing myself from for all eternity, or until I feel differently about the topic. Free women have the prerogative change their minds 😉
— work a full time job
— go shopping as an activity
— buy cheap bacon (never worth it)
I encourage you to make your own “To-Don’t” Lists for the weekend. If you’re anything like me, you actually might end up enjoying your weekend, for a change! We are free men and women after all. Let’s try to live like it! HAPPY WEEKEND!!!
